Highgate Hill House School Celebrates Success of Its First Residential Trip

Highgate Hill House School is delighted to announce the success of its first ever residential trip, which took place from 1st to 2nd December. A group of enthusiastic Year 8 and Year 9 learners spent one night away at Magdalen Farm in Chard, Somerset, taking part in a range of hands-on outdoor experiences designed to build confidence, independence and teamwork.

The group left on Monday morning, cars packed with kit, games and plenty of snacks, and arrived at Magdalen Farm just after lunchtime. After a warm welcome from the staff and a safety briefing over packed lunches, learners settled into their rooms in the beautiful farmhouse. They made their own beds, unpacked their belongings and prepared for the adventures ahead.

Despite the rain, spirits were high as learners headed to the farm’s vegetable garden to pick carrots and salad leaves for their evening meal, tasting a few along the way. Later, they worked together to feed the pigs and goats, and collected fresh eggs from the chickens ready for breakfast the next morning.

As night fell, everyone enjoyed a hearty dinner in the main hall before heading back to the farmhouse for games and a film. Learners slept brilliantly and woke excited for the day ahead.

Tuesday morning brought sunshine and the chance to conquer the low ropes course. Learners demonstrated exceptional teamwork, communication and encouragement, ensuring everyone felt included and supported. The group then moved to the outdoor classroom, where they prepared their own pizzas to be cooked in the large outdoor pizza oven which was a highlight for many.

The group returned to school full of pride, enthusiasm and smiles. The trip marked an important milestone for both learners and staff, showcasing the school’s commitment to providing meaningful, enriching experiences beyond the classroom.

School Principal, Kerry Taylor, praised the success of the residential, saying:

“This first residential marks such an important step for our school community. Our learners embraced every challenge with open minds, resilience and kindness towards one another. We are incredibly proud of the confidence and independence they showed throughout the trip. I want to thank our learners for their bravery in trying something new, our parents for trusting us, and our fantastic staff team for making this opportunity possible. Experiences like this help our young people realise just how capable they truly are.”

Highgate Hill House School extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved, learners, families and staff, for contributing to a residential that will be remembered for years to come.
