Highgate Hill House Learners Complete Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award Expedition

Learners at Highgate Hill House School, located on the Devon and Cornwall border near Holsworthy, have successfully completed the final stage of their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award with a challenging and rewarding expedition.

The expedition, held from 8th to 10th July, followed the completion of all other award sections, including volunteering, physical activities, and skills development. For many learners, the expedition represents the most demanding part of the award, testing their resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in real-world conditions.

Prior to the main expedition, learners participated in a two-day practice expedition, learning to navigate routes independently while coping with challenging weather, including heavy rain. This experience helped them identify the need for appropriate clothing and footwear, ensuring they were fully prepared for the three-day main expedition along the north coast of Cornwall.

During the main expedition, learners completed three circular walks:

  • Tintagel to Bossiney – 2.7 miles
  • Tintagel Church to Trebarwith Strand – 3 miles
  • Padstow to Harbour Cove – 3.1 miles

Along the way, learners enjoyed diverse coastal scenery, cooked hot meals using trangias, and maintained detailed written records of their walks. Throughout the expedition, they demonstrated leadership, communication, teamwork, and perseverance, overcoming challenges and supporting one another to achieve their goals.

Kerry Taylor, Principal at Highgate Hill House School, said:

“Our learners have shown incredible determination, resilience, and teamwork throughout their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award expedition. They faced tough weather conditions and demanding routes, yet approached every challenge with courage and enthusiasm. We are immensely proud of their achievements and the life skills they have developed through this experience.”

The successful completion of the expedition marks a significant milestone for the learners, celebrating both their personal growth and their commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
